In this episode, Dr. Aliber Lozano and Jesus Medrano discuss overcoming imposter syndrome. Jesus shares his journey from a high school student searching for focus to a Senior Staff Software Engineer at Uber Technologies, highlighting his experiences with imposter syndrome at MIT and throughout his career transitions. He emphasizes the importance of recognizing accomplishments, setting achievable goals, and seeking mentorship. Jesus advises keeping track of achievements, defining success realistically, and understanding that perfection is not required. He also stresses the value of organizational culture, etiquette, and the support of peers and mentors in navigating professional challenges.
I had someone actually tell me this, a former intern. He said, ‘I feel like every second of every day someone’s gonna walk through that door and tell me we made a mistake, you shouldn’t be here, you have to go now.’ I think that’s how a lot of people feel when they think about imposter syndrome. Someone’s gonna catch on and find out that I’m not supposed to be here, and soon, they’ll ask me to leave.
